public domain bible project

The post below is no longer proofread, updated, or otherwise maintained. The public domain bible project has moved here.

We are tempted in this age to split our minds, trying to do at once many tasks, until we have only a sparse knowledge of a great many things.  So it has gone with me.  But now I see a need to focus my attention more carefully.  I am asking questions about things I do:  What is the purpose of this thing?  How best may I fulfill that purpose?  For this blog, the answers are, (1) that this is a place for me to do what thinking I wish made public, and (2) that as my thinking needs to focus more, so also must this blog.  Perhaps one day I will choose to go back to having a variety blog.  But for now, I am focusing on one project:  examining the translation of the World English Bible.  I will do this chapter by chapter, looking into the translation decisions involved and commenting.  Of course, my knowledge of the Bible is imperfect.  But I am sure of a few things.  I am sure that the World English Bible is the best attempt at a contemporary, public domain Bible to date.  I am also sure that the World English Bible is so badly in need of additional work that even I, young and ignorant though I may be, can improve upon it.

I will not perfect it.  This is not some sort of attempt to establish any sort of final word on anything.  But it is the first step in a series of steps that I will take until such a time comes as someone more able is willing to take it on.  Your comments, criticisms, and questions are welcome.  I’d love to have you along for this journey.

There may along the road be a few posts on other things.  But I will strive to, in general, keep this blog on one course until it finishes it.

    openenglishbible.org looks like an excellent project. However, it is still under copyright, even if under an extremely wide license. What I’m doing is similar, but I’d like to break with copyright altogether.
