p.d.b. project: genesis 1:1-5

ASV Genesis 1:1-5

1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 1:2 And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

WEB Genesis 1:1-5

1:1 In the beginning God* created the heavens and the earth. 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God’s Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.

1:3 God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 1:4 God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness. 1:5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” There was evening and there was morning, one day.

*The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” After “God,” the Hebrew has the two letters “Aleph Tav” (the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet) as a grammatical marker.

V1: The footnote is unnecessary. I’ll drop it. V2: “waste” seemed to do the job well, so let’s keep it. V2: Add a comment on an alternate translation of “the spirit of God was hovering.”

New Genesis 1:1-5

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was waste and empty, and darkness was on the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over* the surface of the waters. 3 God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that is was good, and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. There was evening and there was morning: one day.

*(v2) “the Spirit of God was hovering over”: or perhaps, “a wind from God swept across.”
