i told you so

Remember how the Democrats refused to add an amendment to the health bill that would prevent it from providing direct taxpayer funding of abortions.  They said the bill didn’t have any abortion in it, so the amendment was just a stalling tactic.  They said the Republicans were just being paranoid.  And Obama even signed a fancy unconstitutional “executive order” prohibiting government funding of abortion to satisfy the Republicans.  As usual, folks, your government (specifically the ruling Democrat part) has lied to you.  Taking money from taxpayers to fund women’s elective abortions starts now.

a poem to dispell the hatred

Joel Watts has written a post condoning hatred of BP.  And although I think he’s substantially right on details, except that the post should probably be renamed “Another Reason to Hate the British Government and their Friends at BP,” I won’t argue the ideological implications of the spill here.  Instead, I will simply try to help lower the blood pressures of liberals, conservatives, fascists, and anarchists alike through a peaceful and non-condemning poem.  I give you The Oil Poem.  Read More »

(tm)

That little symbol means that I recognize the term after which I use it is a legal trademark.  I’m just referring to your product/brand/advertisements.  So don’t sue me.  I’m behaving.

another example of ip nuttiness

Here.  It’s a blow-by-blow account of how IP law hands control of software to whoever has enough lawyers to bully the other side into submission.  Viva open source!

what is troop?

In Hebrew, the word for “troop” is gdud, from the root gud, meaning to crowd or attack.  And the name Gad is closely related thereto.  So we’re dealing with a deliberate play on words in Genesis 49:19:  ““Gad, a troop shall tramp upon him, / But he shall triumph at last” (NKJV).  In English it appears there may be more playing on words than just Gad and troop, though:

Gad, a troop shall tramp upon him,

But he shall triumph at last. Read More »

posting through the deuterocanonicals: tobit 12

I promised this post would be written Monday.  But as probably the only biblioblogger in God’s green earth who has no internet connection at home, I faced the unique challenge of discovering that my library and coffee shop were apparently closed for Venezuelan Independence Day.  And so with no more ado, back to Tobit.  We find Tobit and family where we left them last–at what appeared to be the happy ending of their story.  But there’s more: Read More »

posting through the deuterocanonicals: tobit 11

I feel as though I have nothing new to say about politics today.  Sure, there’s no doubt that I could comment on a couple news stories, but you’d most likely already know what I’d have to say about them if you’ve read much here.  So back to Tobit.  Read More »

yer a bunch a criminals

Story here.  In a monumental twisting of words, the US government is now labelling those who participate in the sharing of copyrighted material “organized criminals,” as though those who listened to downloaded songs were a bunch of mafia people holding up DVD stores violently.  Meanwhile, Stephan Kinsella’s anti-IP message has been gaining traction–because his book “Against IP” is merely a statement of what practically every young adult has already acknowledged through their actions:  that information isn’t property.

posting through the deuterocanonicals: tobit 10

It’s been awhile (almost six weeks) since my last post in the deuterocanonicals series.  So here’s a round-up of past posts on the topic:  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9.  As before, I’m treating these books as fallible but important pieces of our Judaeo-Christian heritage, with respectful disagreement with my Roman Catholic and Orthodox brethren who may view this book as fully inspired in the normal canonical sense, whatever that may be.
