Now Absalom in his life had taken and erected himself the pillar which is in the King’s Valley.  For he said, I have no son for my name to be remembered by.  And he named the pillar after himself.  And it is called Absalom’s Place to this day.

Really, a pillar called “Place”?  Other translations say “Absalom’s Hand,” which also doesn’t look like a pillar.  Perhaps the translations are obscuring the fact that the word translated hand or pillar, the Hebrew yad, is being used here in a very crude and insulting reference to Absalom.  Check out this post.
